Volunteers Week

WHY VOLUNTEER Starting my PR career in a busy press office for Centrica my manager at the time cajoled me into CIPR membership. (He was the Chair of Yorkshire and Lincolnshire group at the time).  I then spent a couple of years working in the Communications Team for Manchester Airport but due to a company restructuring I left to go freelance and have been an independent PR practitioner ever since. If I am honest, I joined the NW committee to find fellow PR colleagues and possible business opportunities.  I soon discovered that there were plenty of ways to get involved, meet other freelancers who I could collaborate with (some of whom have become lifelong friends) so that’s probably why I’m still volunteering eleven years later! Joining CIPR NorthWest committee I joined the committee after accepting a personal invitation from the secretary who thought it may be a good way of meeting other practitioners. Since then, I have engaged with the group in so many ways. Initially I immersed myself with event management by attending events and joined the PRide subgroup. I’ve carried out most activities including venue liaison, menu tasting, sponsor search, judging national Pride entries and presenting an award on stage on the night. I’ve enjoyed promoting entries and posting on our social media platforms and writing for the regional newsletter too. I initiated school liaison in my area and supported career days by promoting PR as a career option.  I’ve also mentored University PR students by offering work experience and delivering a guest lecture at MMU. I enjoy the comradery of the group, working as a team...
